Why not commercial license?
A LLM model as this one comes out under a CC-NC (Creative Commons Non-Commercial) license, and its creators are boasting about how it outperforms many truly free models. But wait, there's a catch – it's only for non-commercial use. So, why release it on HuggingFace, which is built on the backbone of truly free software, software that champions freedom and creativity for everyone? It's like handing out gold but telling people they can't use it to make more gold.
The HuggingFace Paradox: HuggingFace is a platform that thrives on open-source contributions and the power of collaboration. By releasing a model under CC-NC on this platform, it’s like inviting everyone to the party but saying, "No commercial dancing allowed." Isn't the point of HuggingFace to foster innovation and creativity without restrictions?
The Irony of Innovation: If the goal is to innovate and push the boundaries of what's possible, why limit the scope of that innovation to non-commercial use only? It’s like releasing a groundbreaking new paintbrush and saying, "Feel free to paint, just don't sell your art."
The Community’s Dilemma: The open-source community values transparency and the freedom to build and improve upon existing work. By restricting commercial use, you’re limiting the potential for the model to be integrated into new and exciting projects that could have a wider impact.
Isn't it better to release LLM under a more permissive license like Apache 2.0 or MIT? These licenses allow for both commercial and non-commercial use, fostering a true spirit of collaboration and innovation. By doing so, you can ensure that your model can be used to create even more amazing things, without any restrictions. After all, isn’t the goal to make the world a better place through technology, and not just for those who aren’t making money?
So, let’s embrace a more open and inclusive approach. Release LLM under Apache 2.0 or MIT, and let the creativity flow!
